Soft open for 40,000 sq. ft. Loblaws at Eglinton-Dunfield

Loblaws has quietly opened its large new store on the second level of the podium at the Madison Condominium on Eglinton East between Dunfield Ave. and Lillian Street. There was little fanfare Friday as business began at the Midtown location. Traffic was brisk Saturday with many people finding the store open by accident. The location has a similar feel to the Maple Leaf Gardens store and other ultra-new locations. Large signage declares the presence of sushi, fish and so on.

ORANGE ENAMEL CARTS

The carts at the Madison Loblaws are of the orange-enamel finish seen at MLG. No harsh metal buggies at this flagship. The LCBO is also scheduled to open at the Madison. Loblaws occupies the entire 40,000 square foot second level of the podium, which like the first floor, has a ceiling level that is the equivalent of two floors. The LCBO is also scheduled to open at the Madison in a unit said to be 7,500 square feet on the main level.

OFFICIAL OPENING OCT. 21

Staff at Loblaws were eager to tell of the official opening set for Friday, October 21, at which there will be music and a good deal more fuss and favours for customers. Perhaps “Mr. Weston himself” will be there one clerk teased. The Madison is promoting “some of  the biggest names in retail” for the spaces and notes “three dedicated elevators” and the open escalator pictured below. For those with a little recall and perhaps nostalgia for the “old” Eglinton Ave., the Madison sits mainly on the site of the York Theatre plus parking and a few random low-rise offices down at the Lillian end.
